A House of Assembly candidate in Akwa Ibom State, Okon Uwah, was killed on Wednesday, March 18 while on campaign in Ward Three in the Ukanafun Local Government Area.
Unconfirmed reports say that the deceased, who was a former Deputy Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, slumped at the residence of his in-law, one Godwin Udoko while holding a political consultation.
According to an eyewitness, during the event, a disagreement began over how to share the consultation money dropped by Uwah, who is running for the Ukanafun State Constituency on the platform of the All Progressives Congress.
The youths reportedly became unruly and surged to the venue, however, Uwah, tried to move away from the ensuing stampede but slumped and was trampled by the surging crowd.
The state Commissioner of Police in the state, Gabriel Achong, confirmed the killing, saying that his men had arrested many suspects.
Achong said: “I have just spoken with His Excellency, Governor Godswill Akpabio and he said I should bring all those responsible to book even if they are members of the Peoples Democratic Party.”
“Because of that I have changed my plan to travel to Abuja for an engagement. I have moved the Area Commander in Ikot Ekpene and the Divisional Police Officers to Ukanafun.”
