A quick-thinking mum saved her four-year-old son’s life - thanks to a choking advert that she’d just watched on Facebook.
Melanie Thys ran into Alex’s bedroom when he began to gag on a crisp, finding him motionless and rapidly turning blue.
But instead of panicking, the 44-year-old sprang into action and repeated the crucial techniques she’d recently learnt in a 40-second clip entitled The Chokeables’ on social media.
The video, which features celebs David Walliams, Johnny Vegas, Sir John Hurt, and David Mitchell, has already been viewed 5.7 million times on the internet.
Melanie of Blythe Bridge, Staffs, added: “My adrenaline kicked in and I automatically knew what I had to do thanks to ‘The Chokeables’ advert that I had seen the other week.
“I lay Alex along my arm with his head slightly lowered and firmly patted his back.
“It took about five back blows before he made a sound and then thankfully he was sick and managed to breathe again. I was just so relieved that I knew what to do.
“The more people that watch this advert the better. My experience just goes to show that in an instant something like a crisp can cause this to happen when you least expect it.
“I really hope that by sharing our story, I can help to spread the awareness.”
Sue Killen, chief executive of St John’s Ambulance, said: “It’s wonderful that the public has embraced these characters and taken the technique on board.”
