The activities of governance of the Imo State government have now moved to the private resident of the State governor, Chief Rochas Okorocha at Spibat Estate.
The multi-million Naira Estate of the governor expands from Amakohia Uratta in Owerri North LGA to Mbieri in Mbailoti LGA covering over 10 hectares of land. Prior to 2011, the Estate has few dilapidated buildings but, currently the governor had built the state of the art of twin duplexes with modern Security gadgets.
Daily Times investigations reveal that Okorocha administered the affairs of the state from his Spibat Estate while the Douglas House the seat of government is now a ghost city. It was further revealed that the first family of the State had also vacated the government lodge and moved to the Estate.
A visit to Government House, Owerri (Douglas House) by our correspondent observed that skeletal activities of the government are being carried out at the office of the Chief of Staff to the governor while few security men are sighted at various gates at the Government House.
Daily Times also reports that Governor Okorocha had only spent six months in his office when he resumed office in 2011, before abandoning it to a ‘Bush Bar’at the Government House near his official lodge. It was from the bar he administered the activities of the State government.
Reacting, the Owerri legal practitioner and National President of the Civil Liberty Organisation Mr. Uche Wisdom Durueke described the action of the State governor as illegal and wrongful act.
According to him, the State has only one Government House (Douglas House) Owerri, stressing that, it is unacceptable to carry out the activities of government in a private resident where movements are restricted.He however said that, he opposed to corruption but such allegation of corruption must be supported with evidence.
The former Governor of Anambra State, Mr. Peter Obi expressed shock that a sitting governor could amassed wealth in State that being ravaged with poverty. Obi in emotion laden voice at the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship campaign at Ihitte Ubom LGA of the State he observed that Imo State was among the heavily indebted States in the Country.
